FAQ
Why do you only sell in the spring and fall? Why bare root?
Potted plants often spend too much time in the pot and become root bound - stunting their growth for years. Many potted plants are first grown in the ground then have their roots cut to fit in a pot. This results in an imbalanced tree to root ratio - also stunting their growth for years. Our bare root plants are small but healthy and eager to grow. They're also cheaper and easier to plant. We sell only when the plants are asleep for the season, but when the soil is thawed. May and October is when we're looking to get some plants in your hands.Wait, how small are these plants?
Our nursery plants are available for sale after their first growing season. They're likely to be 6" to 18" tall. The root systems will likely be compact too, but their fibrous structure from growing in air prune beds, will have them ready to interact with the soil. When we plant them in our forest garden we see a very high survival rate and we don't ever water them. If you can spoil them with regular watering then they will thrive for sure. Less often we will sell more mature plants but we'll make sure you're ok with that first.Sounds like these small plants might need protection from animals. Thoughts?
Yes. We encourage you to protect your plants. Voles would like to strip the bark. Rabbits and deer would like to eat the young tips. If these encounters don't kill the plant they will set the growth way back. We use a 12" tall ring of aluminum window screen to deflect the voles. We often see others using drainage pipe for vole protection. We use a 5' tall ring of field fencing to deflect rabbits and deer. Ask us for details if you like.Where are you located? Will you ship or deliver?
We live in central Winnipeg and would like for you to pick up plants at our home. If that doesn't work for you, let us know and we'll figure something out. When is the guest house going to be ready for booking?
It's hard to know for sure. It should be ready for booking by the spring of 2027. Maybe sooner, maybe later? We're excited to welcome guests, tour them through our plantings and if the timing works, share our fruitful bounty. What is Wolseley Wild Play?
